A Good Initiative – Azores

Like the beginning to any good adventure, the idea of heading to Sao Miguel Island in the Azores was attractive yet precarious. First, the island is still fairly uncharted in the mainstream skateboard world. This of course is the ultimate goal when seeking out a new place to skate but tough when you don’t have any references to go off of. Second, January is in the middle of the Azores’ rainy season and the factor of getting rained out was high. On both accounts, the possibility of ending up on a skate trip with no skateboarding was of concern.

Nevertheless, this lush, paradisal volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean was far too attractive to ignore. For 17 days we road tripped around the island with Alex Furtado, Japhey Dow, Dylan Fulford, Scott Balkwill, Scott Varney, Kevin Lowry and Nestor Judkins while checking out the views, natural hot springs and sampling local wine, cheese, steak and skate spots.
